What is pdXML?
All documents contain structured information.  Structured information contains both content (words, pictures, etc.) presented in a fashion that is understandable to the reader.  Imagine taking all the data represented on a document and grouping it into a text file.  Then taking the presentation of that data on a document and having that in another text file.  The first file containing data is called the XML document and the presentation is called the XSL file or style sheet.

With this technology it is possible to disconnect data from presentation.  Now we have this ability it is possible to swap out the style sheets to have different views of the same data.  In our demo the control valve is shown presented as a datasheet.  Just by changing the style sheet it is possible to make the same data looks like an instrument index.  The data remains the same.

XML is a markup language that is a mechanism to identify structures in a document.  pdXML is a standard way to markup XML documents so that data may be shared between plant design software systems for the process, power and manufacturing industries.

The pdXML Initiative
The pdXML (Plant Design eXtensible Markup Language) is an initiative to create a software and equipment vendor neutral, public domain, XML schema defining data for the complete life cycle of a process , power or manufacturing plant.  This is a no cost initiative hosted by Plant Design Automation Consulting (PDAC), Inc.

The pdXML initiative was announced at Daratech 2001 in January 2001 by PDAC, inc. in the following Press Release.   The following presentation was given at Daratech 2001 by Mike Scammahorn on 'Lifecycle Data Management Today' which highlights some of the potential of a vendor neutral, public domain XML definition.  The presentation shows how this technology equally helps owner operator engineering, EPC, the equipment vendor, and the owner operator facility. The First Schema Specification Document
In May, 2001 we issued the first BizTalk schema specification document for a process control valve.  The overall purpose of this first schema definition is to enable the efficient data transfer between plant design software systems.  Anyone writing data to the pdXML_ControlValve definition will be able to take advantage of a 'define once' relationship to enable them to import/export between multiple plant design software systems.

The pdXML_ControlValve schema definition covers the following general descriptions:

Project information
  Company information
  Contact information
  Site data requirements
  Control valve definition
  Control valve accessories
  Relationships to documents
  Revision history to documents

The pdXML_ControlValve schema definition also facilitates the following work processes:

Control valve vendor/client data transfer
  Control valve sizing/calculation programs
  Process data transfer
  Line size and schedule
Piping physical dimensional data transfer to future 3D model plant design software
  Purchase order/requisitioning
  Automated bid tabulation
  Spare parts data transfer
  Construction tracking
  Maintenance and plant facility operations
  Document cataloged items

We encourage you to look at our pdXML technology demonstration above and then contact us on how we can help you with implementation of pdXML into your work process. Contact us now!!
